Our version of the Wizard of Oz was written by Miranda Parker and was set on Oldham rather than Kansas. This was a conscious decision because of our audience is from Oldham the story was more relatable, a lot of children from Oldham me being included grow up being told how Oldham isn't a good place to live and the government agree with multiple articles being published criticizing Oldham. However, to have a fairytale set in Oldham the main character being so real it really brings a true fairy tale to the school children of Oldham. We also use Oldham's reputation to our advantage with humor, there are a lot of jokes about the spelling with the scarecrow asking “What's OLD-HAM?’ as well as a lot of confused and disgusted looks at the name like when I play Glinda the lyrics to my song are “and OLDHAM (disgusted look)  she says is the name of the star”
In the book there is a lot of symbolism representing the American social and political climate of the 1890s. This is has been a continue even in each the wizard of oz's various adaptations. Dorothy represents the American ideals she is the lead led astray and looking for her home, she follows the yellow(golden in the book) to the emerald city that represents the green paperback money that we have given a value to. Once she meets the wizard we find out he's been lying and isn't actually a good wizard at all. The wizard represents a seaming politician as people where more critical of political leaders during this time. Hugh Rockoff suggested in 1990 that the novel was an allegory about the demonetization of silver in 1873, whereby “the cyclone that carried Dorothy to the Land of Oz represents the economic and political upheaval, the yellow brick road stands for the gold standard, and the silver shoes Dorothy inherits from the Wicked Witch of the East represents the pro-silver movement. When Dorothy is taken to the Emerald Palace before her audience with the Wizard she is led through seven passages and up three flights of stairs, a subtle reference to the Coinage Act of 1873  which started the class conflict in America.”
